1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews: 2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, 3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ. 4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.
5 ¶ But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. 6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also; 7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Cæsar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus. 8 And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things. 9 And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.
10 ¶ And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. 12 Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few. 13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people. 14 And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still. 15 And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.
16 ¶ Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. 17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him. 18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection. 19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is ? 20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean. 21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)
22 ¶ Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. 23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. 24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; 25 Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; 26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; 27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: 28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. 29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device. 30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: 31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men , in that he hath raised him from the dead.
32 ¶ And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter . 33 So Paul departed from among them. 34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
Pavel în Tesalonic şi Bereea
1 Au trecut prin Amfipolis şi prin Apolonia şi au ajuns la Tesalonic, unde era o sinagogă a iudeilor. 2 După obiceiul său, Pavel a intrat în sinagogă şi vreme de trei sâmbete le-a vorbit din Scripturi, 3 explicând şi dovedindu-le că Hristos trebuia să pătimească şi să învie din morţi şi că „Iisus, pe care vi-l vestesc, acesta este Hristosul!” 4 Unii dintre ei au crezut şi li s-au alăturat lui Pavel şi Sila, precum şi o mare mulţime de greci care se temeau de Dumnezeu şi multe din femeile de frunte ale cetăţii. 5 Iudeii însă invidioşi, au strâns nişte oameni răi, de prin piaţă, au adunat mulţimile şi au început să întărâte cetatea şi s-au dus la casa lui Iason, încercând să-i scoată afară, în faţa mulţimii. 6 Negăsindu-i, l-au târât pe Iason şi pe alţi câţiva fraţi la conducătorii cetăţii şi strigau: „Oamenii aceştia, care au tulburat lumea întreagă, sunt şi aici, 7 Iason i-a găzduit, şi cu toţii lucrează împotriva poruncilor Cezarului şi spun că este alt rege, unul Iisus!” 8 Au tulburat mulţimea şi pe conducătorii care i-au auzit. 9 Aceştia, după ce i-au pus să plătească, pe Iason şi pe ceilalţi, le-au dat drumul.
10 Fraţii însă i-au trimis îndată, noaptea, pe Pavel şi pe Sila, la Bereea. Când au ajuns acolo, au intrat în sinagoga iudeilor. 11 Aceştia aveau un suflet mai nobil decât cei din Tesalonic; primeau cuvântul cu toată inima, în fiecare zi, şi cercetau Scripturile ca să vadă dacă scrie aşa. 12 Mulţi dintre ei au crezut şi multe dintre femeile de vază ale grecilor şi mulţi bărbaţi. 13 Când cei din Tesalonic au aflat că Pavel a vestit cuvântul lui Dumnezeu şi în Bereea, au venit şi aici să agite şi să tulbure mulţimile. 14 Imediat însă fraţii l-au trimis pe Pavel spre mare, în timp ce Sila şi Timotei au rămas pe loc. 15 Cei care îl însoţeau pe Pavel l-au condus până la Atena şi s-au întors apoi cu porunca să vină şi Sila şi Timotei, cât de repede pot.
Predica lui Pavel în Areopagul Atenei
16 În Atena, în timp ce îi aştepta, Pavel simţea că fierbea în sine de mânie când vedea cât de plină de idoli este cetatea. 17 Discuta cu iudeii în fiecare zi, în sinagogă, precum şi cu cei temători de Dumnezeu şi cu trecătorii din piaţă. 18 Unii dintre filozofii epicurieni şi stoici au intrat în vorbă cu el şi ziceau: „Ce fel de vorbe tot împrăştie omul acesta?” iar alţii ziceau: „Pare să vestească nişte zeităţi străine”, căci le vestea pe Iisus şi Învierea. 19 L-au luat cu ei şi l-au dus în Areopag, unde i-au zis: „Poţi să ne spui ce este această învăţătură nouă de care vorbeşti? 20 Căci ne-au ajuns la urechi nişte lucruri străine. Am vrea, deci, să cunoaştem ce vor să însemne lucrurile acestea?” 21 Toţi atenienii şi toţi străinii care locuiau acolo nu-şi petreceau timpul cu altceva decât vorbind sau ascultând ceva nou.
22 Pavel a stat în picioare în mijlocul Areopagului şi a zis: „Atenieni, văd din toate că sunteţi foarte religioşi. 23 Mergeam prin cetate şi priveam locurile voastre de închinare şi am descoperit chiar şi un altar pe care era scris, Zeului necunoscut. Ceea ce voi veneraţi fără să cunoaşteţi, aceea vă vestesc eu astăzi! 24 Dumnezeul care a creat lumea şi tot ce este în ea, El este Domnul cerului şi al pământului şi nu locuieşte în temple făcute de mâna omului, 25 nici nu este slujit de mâini omeneşti, ca şi cum I-ar trebui ceva, căci El dă tuturor viaţa, suflarea şi toate. 26 El a creat dintr-un singur om toate neamurile omeneşti, ca să locuiască pe toată faţa pământului, şi le-a pus vremuri şi hotare în care să trăiască, 27 să-L caute pe Dumnezeu şi să-L găsească, măcar şi bâjbâind, deşi El nu este departe de nici unul dintre noi.
28 Căci în El trăim, ne mişcăm şi existăm, după cum au zis şi unii din poeţii voştri: Noi suntem din neamul Lui… 29 Astfel, fiind noi din neamul lui Dumnezeu, nu trebuie să credem că dumnezeirea este asemenea aurului sau argintului sau a pietrei cioplite prin îndemânarea şi imaginaţia omului. 30 De aceea, Dumnezeu trece cu vederea vremurile de neştiinţă şi vesteşte acum tuturor oamenilor, de pretutindeni, să se pocăiască 31 pentru că a pus o zi în care va judeca lumea în dreptate, prin Omul pe care L-a hotărât şi pe care L-a adeverit tuturor prin învierea Lui din morţi.”
32 Când au auzit ei despre învierea din morţi au început să-şi bată joc, iar unii au zis: „Bine, despre asta te vom asculta şi altădată!” 33 Astfel, Pavel a plecat din mijlocul lor. 34 Totuşi, unii dintre oameni au crezut, trecând de partea lui, între ei fiind Dionisie Areopagitul şi o femeie pe nume Damaris, precum şi alţii împreună cu ei.
