1 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, 2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: 3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. 4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, 5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. 6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. 7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, 8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. 9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; 12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; 14 Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. 15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: 16 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. 17 Honour all men . Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king. 18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward. 19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. 20 For what glory is it , if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it , ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. 21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: 22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: 23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: 24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. 25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
Piatra cea Vie şi poporul lui Dumnezeu
1 Dând la o parte, aşadar, orice răutate şi orice înşelăciune, ipocrizie, invidie şi bârfă, 2 ca nişte nou-născuţi să doriţi laptele duhovnicesc cel adevărat, pentru ca, prin el să creşteţi spre mântuire, 3 dacă aţi gustat şi aţi văzut cât de bun este Domnul. 4 Apropiaţi-vă de El, Piatra cea Vie, neluată în seamă de oameni, dar aleasă şi preţioasă înaintea lui Dumnezeu, 5 şi ca nişte pietre vii zidiţi-vă pe voi înşivă ca o casă duhovnicească, spre a fi o preoţie sfântă, care aduce jertfe duhovniceşti, bine primite de Dumnezeu, prin Iisus Hristos, 6 fiindcă Scriptura zice:
Iată, pun în Sion o piatră,
piatra din capul unghiului, aleasă, preţioasă.
Şi cine se încrede în ea, nicidecum nu se va ruşina.
7 Aşadar, pentru voi, care credeţi, ea este cinstea voastră. Dar pentru cei ce nu cred:
piatra pe care n-au luat-o în seamă ziditorii,
aceea a ajuns în capul unghiului
8 şi este
piatră de poticnire
şi stâncă de cădere.
De ea se împiedică toţi cei ce nu se încred în cuvântul lui Dumnezeu şi la aceasta au fost sortiţi.
9 Voi însă sunteţi „o seminţie aleasă, o preoţie împărătească, un neam sfânt, un popor adunat de Dumnezeu” ca să vestiţi faptele măreţe ale Celui ce v-a chemat din întuneric la lumina Sa minunată.
10 Voi, care altădată nu eraţi un popor,
acum sunteţi poporul lui Dumnezeu;
voi care nu primiserăţi îndurare,
acum aţi primit îndurare.
Viaţa creştinilor în lume
11 Preaiubiţilor, ca pe nişte străini şi peregrini în lume, vă îndemn să vă feriţi de poftele trupeşti, care se luptă cu sufletul. 12 Să aveţi o purtare frumoasă în mijlocul păgânilor, pentru ca, văzând faptele voastre bune, chiar atunci când vă blamează ca pe nişte răufăcători, să dea slavă lui Dumnezeu în ziua când vor fi cercetaţi.
13 Supuneţi-vă oricărei orânduiri omeneşti, de dragul Domnului: atât împăratului ca suveran, 14 cât şi guvernatorilor, ca trimişi ai Lui să-I pedepsească pe răufăcători şi să-I laude pe cei ce fac binele, 15 întrucât aşa este voia lui Dumnezeu, ca, făcând binele, să reducem la tăcere prostia oamenilor ignoranţi. 16 Ca nişte oameni liberi, dar care nu faceţi din libertate un paravan pentru rele, ci, ca nişte robi ai lui Dumnezeu, 17 respectaţi-i pe toţi oamenii, iubiţi frăţia credincioşilor, temeţi-vă de Dumnezeu şi daţi cinste împăratului.
Exemplul lui Hristos în suferinţă
18 Slugilor, supuneţi-vă stăpânilor voştri cu tot respectul, nu numai celor buni şi cumsecade, chiar şi celor duri, 19 fiindcă este un har dacă cineva rabdă suferinţe, pătimind pe nedrept, din cauza credinţei în Dumnezeu. 20 De fapt, ce laudă este dacă răbdaţi când sunteţi bătuţi pentru că aţi făcut rău? Dar dacă răbdaţi, pătimind pentru că aţi făcut binele, este un har de la Dumnezeu. 21 Căci la aceasta aţi fost chemaţi, fiindcă şi Hristos a pătimit pentru voi, lăsându-vă un exemplu ca să călcaţi pe urmele Lui.
22 El n-a făcut păcat
şi în gura Lui nu s-a aflat înşelăciune,
23 batjocorit fiind, nu întorcea batjocura, pătimind, nu ameninţa, ci lăsa totul în seama Celui ce judecă drept. 24 El Însuşi a purtat păcatele noastre în trupul Lui, pe lemn, pentru ca noi, fiind morţi faţă de păcate, să trăim pentru dreptate. Prin rănile Lui aţi fost vindecaţi, 25 fiindcă eraţi ca nişte oi rătăcite, dar acum aţi fost aduşi înapoi la Păstorul şi Păzitorul sufletelor voastre.
