Sfatuirea şi ajutarea credincioşilor
1 Pe cel bătrân nu-l mustra, ci îndeamnă-l ca pe un tată, pe cei tineri ca pe nişte fraţi, 2 pe bătrâne ca pe nişte mame, pe tinere ca pe nişte surori, cu toată curăţia.
3 Respectă văduvele, pe cele ce sunt cu adevărat văduve. 4 Dacă o văduvă are copii sau nepoţi, aceştia să înveţe mai întâi să-şi dovedească evlavia faţă de propria lor familie şi să-şi răsplătească părinţii, fiindcă acest lucru este plăcut înaintea lui Dumnezeu. 5 Cea cu adevărat văduvă şi rămasă singură şi-a pus nădejdea în Dumnezeu şi stăruie în cereri şi rugăciuni zi şi noapte, 6 însă văduva care trăieşte în plăceri, deşi trăieşte, este moartă. 7 Porunceşte-le aceste lucruri, ca să nu li se poată reproşa nimic. 8 Dacă cineva nu se îngrijeşte de ai săi, şi mai ales de cei din casa lui, atunci acesta îşi tăgăduieşte credinţa şi este mai rău decât un necredincios. 9 Ca să fie înscrisă şi ajutată ca văduvă, o femeie trebuie să aibă mai mult de şaizeci de ani, să fi fost femeia unui singur bărbat, 10 să fie cunoscută pentru faptele ei bune: să fi crescut copii, să fi fost ospitalieră, să fi spălat picioarele sfinţilor, să-i fi ajutat pe cei în necazuri, să se fi dedicat tuturor faptelor bune. 11 Însă văduvele tinere să nu fie numărate printre ele, fiindcă atunci când dorinţele trupeşti le îndepărtează de Hristos vor să se mărite 12 şi se fac vinovate, încălcându-şi făgăduinţa dintâi. 13 În acelaşi timp se învaţă să fie leneşe şi să umble din casă în casă, şi nu numai că devin leneşe, dar şi bârfitoare şi iscoditoare, vorbind ceea ce nu trebuie. 14 Prin urmare, vreau ca văduvele tinere să se căsătorească, să aibă copii, să aibă grijă de casă şi să nu-i dea potrivnicului nici un prilej de ocară, 15 fiindcă unele s-au şi rătăcit deja şi îl urmează pe Satana. 16 Dacă vreun credincios sau vreo credincioasă are văduve în familie, să se îngrijească de ele şi să nu împovăreze Biserica, pentru ca aceasta să se poată îngriji de cele cu adevărat văduve.
17 Prezbiterii care conduc bine să fie consideraţi vrednici de o cinste îndoită, mai ales cei care se ostenesc cu învăţătura şi cuvântul. 18 Pentru că Scriptura spune: Să nu legi gura boului care treieră! şi Vrednic este lucrătorul de plata sa! 19 Împotriva unui prezbiter să nu primeşti nici o învinuire decât dacă vine de la doi sau trei martori. 20 Pe cei care păcătuiesc, mustră-i înaintea tuturor, pentru ca şi ceilalţi să se teamă. 21 Înaintea lui Dumnezeu, a lui Hristos Iisus şi a îngerilor aleşi, te îndemn stăruitor să păzeşti aceste lucruri, fără prejudecăţi şi fără părtinire. 22 Nu te grăbi să-ţi pui mâinile peste cineva, ca nu cumva să te faci părtaş la păcatele altora. Păstrează-te curat! 23 De acum înainte să nu bei doar apă, ci şi puţin vin, din cauza stomacului tău şi a deselor tale slăbiciuni.
24 Păcatele unora sunt vădite şi cunoscute înainte de judecată, în timp ce ale altora sunt date la iveală atunci. 25 La fel şi faptele bune sunt vădite, iar cele care sunt altfel nu pot fi ascunse.
1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; 2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity. 3 Honour widows that are widows indeed. 4 But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God. 5 Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day. 6 But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth. 7 And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless. 8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. 9 Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man, 10 Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints’ feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work. 11 But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry; 12 Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith. 13 And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not. 14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. 15 For some are already turned aside after Satan. 16 If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed. 17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. 18 For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward. 19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses. 20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear. 21 I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality. 22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure. 23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities. 24 Some men’s sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after. 25 Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise cannot be hid.
